About this Course
What is Shared Reading?
Shared Reading is a flexible, innovative, strengths-based group activity framework that can be used to support people's wellbeing.
It harnesses the power of stories to bring people together in order to:
- Reduce loneliness/social isolation
- Improve communication skills
- Promote social connection
- Help people find meaning amidst life's challenges
Our training will show you how to lead groups that can support clients to:
- Feel more confident
- Express themselves freely
- Connect deeply to other people
- Develop communication skills
- Feel better
- Become motivated
Who should attend?
Shared Reading training is for anyone who works to improve people's wellbeing and connection. In the past we have trained:
- Mental health professionals
- Aged care workers
- Community workers
- Librarians
- Disability workers
What will I learn?
You will learn how to facilitate a Shared Reading group including:
- Selecting and using appropriate materials
- Supporting people to engage and communicate
- Reading in a way that is engaging
- Creating a safe environment
- Dealing with challenging situations
- Working with stories and poetry
As part of the training package trainees will also receive 6 months supervision and support to establish groups.
When will the course run?
The course begins on Friday 14th April and will run for 6 weekly sessions following. All sessions will be from 1 - 5pm. The dates are as follows:
- Session 1: Friday 11th August, 1-5pm
- Session 2: Friday 18th August, 1-5pm
- Session 3: Friday 25th August, 1-5pm
- Session 4: Friday 1st September, 1-5pm
- Session 5: Friday 8th September, 1-5pm
- Session 6: Friday 15th September, 1-5pm
Sessions will be conducted online via zoom so can be accessed from any location.
About your facilitator
With 12 years experience and having personally facilitated hundreds of Shared Reading groups, Christopher Smith is a leading figure in the Shared Reading movement in Australia. Christopher trained with The Reader Organisation in the UK in 2011 and founded Shared Reading NSW in 2014 to grow the movement and to train others in the framework of Shared Reading.

The total cost of the 6 week training course and 6 months support is $995 per participant.
